This may be redundant as the problem was solved; however I think it is stated that Isis requires a pha type file and will not read a pi type spectrum. This is not correct in my experience. I have recently been looking at some contin. clock datasets (ObsId 1023 and 1024) and it is true I experienced some difficulty in getting spectra that Isis could read. This turned out to be because of shortcuts; I succeeded with both datasets when I used the threads: 1. Calculate CC-mode Times of Arrival 2. Apply Barycenter Correction which are completed and then 3. Step-by-Step Guide to Creating ACIS Spectra for Pointlike Sources In thread 3, the Extract Source and Background Spectra (dmextract), "In this example, we extract the spectra in pulse invariant (PI) space. This creates a histogram of number of counts vs. PI channel. Make sure you use opt=pha1 (the default) to ensure that the correct keywords are written to the spectrum header that will make the file XSPEC and Sherpa compliant". I found this should read "... make the file XSPEC, Isis and Sherpa compliant", as PI space and opt=pha1 (the default) worked fine for Isis too. In the resulting spectra (with arf and rmf assigned), the results match very nicely those published in Vrtilek et al APJL 563:L139, 2001, Figure 2, which were prepared with Sherpa. I used PI space, however I have not checked the use of PHA space fully. Once I tried and it failed, but I may have overlooked a point when preparing the rmf: " The default for extraction in PI space is axis2=1:1024:1; in PHA space it would be 1:4096:2." The spectra I extracted *.fits can be input into sherpa for fitting. However, because of possible pileup I would like to fit them in ISIS. For regular spectrum extraction using psextract there is an option to set ptype=pha in order to get a file that can be read into ISIS. This option does not seem to exist for dmextract: keiko-82: ciao Warning: CIAO has not been fully tested on this system CIAO configuration is complete...
