The Kavli Foundation has provided the MIT Kavli Institute with a generous endowment. A portion of the yearly income which MKI receives from this endowment is dedicated to an internal proposal competition for Kavli Research & Investment Fund (KRIF) awards. The MKI Director circulates a letter each December with information on how to apply for funding. The Administrative Officer can also answer questions about the process.

Proposals for instrumentation, technology development, theoretical investigations, computation, and analysis and other research activities are welcome. The proposal lead must be associated with MKI as a member of its faculty, affiliated faculty, Senior Research Scientists/Engineers, Principal Research Scientists/Engineers, or affiliated Principal Research Scientists/Engineers.
