In this case, the problem is not the makefiles.

If I understand the problem correctly, my preferred solution
will involve changing the names of a few symbols newly
introduced with heasoft-6.6.  If the heasoft developers
disagree, then I'll have to look for a different solution.

(This is not the $specfile problem that Gulab mentioned).
