FWIW, I use these two undocumented functions:

private variable Plot_Info_Stack = {};
define push_plot ()
{
   list_append (Plot_Info_Stack, get_plot_options ());
}

define pop_plot ()
{
   set_plot_options (list_pop (Plot_Info_Stack, -1));
}

So when I want to create a new plot without worrying about messing up
the plot state, I do:

     push_plot ();     % save the current plot state
      
     % issue plotting commands
     
     pop_plot ();      % restore the previous plot state
