trouble reading fits files

I am trying to read a fits file with ISIS, using, e.g., fits_read_col.

I get an error message, "Unable to locate a binary table".

However, fv is able to display the fits file just fine.
Prism has trouble loading the file data.
dmlist (in CIAO 3.4) also has some trouble reading the file.

I have tried saving the file in fv and still can't read it in ISIS.

I have trouble with the low-level _fits* routines as well, though maybe I
mis-used them.

Am I doing something wrong? (I've read plenty of fits files before with no
trouble.) This is a freshly-generated fits file from HEASARC Browse, so I
don't think it's too out of date.

Is there some sort of "fitsclean" utility that would make it isis-readable?

(I sent a short copy of a sample fits file to John and Dave H.)

Thanks,
Rob
