For custom label positioning relative to the plot viewport, you
can use the low-level pgplot function _pgmtxt. This function
is documented at

  http://www.astro.caltech.edu/~tjp/pgplot/subroutines.html#PGMTXT

I've appended an example of using _pgmtxt with multiplot.

Alternatively, _pgptxt allows drawing text at an arbitrary
angle at a position specified in the (X,Y) coordinates of the
current plot. The isis function xylabel() is a wrapper around
this pgplot function.

  variable id = plot_open ("plot.ps/cps");
  multiplot (ones(3));

  variable x = [1:10];
  plot(x,x);
  plot(x,x^2);
  plot(x,x^3);

  multiplot (1);
  _pgmtxt ("L", 3, 0.25, 0.0, "A long Y-axis label that spans several plots");

  plot_close (id);
