I do not think that the new names are any more clear than
than the old names.  Basically the issue is to have commands that
perform the fit with or without the response.  So, I recommend that
fit_counts take an _optional_ integer argument:

    fit_counts (1); ==> use response
    fit_counts (0); ==> do not use response

It is optional in the sense that if the user omits it, the effect
would be the same as using the response.
