I have always had a similar problem: when the font size is large enough (but not necessarily very large), the labels go outside the plot window. So I guess I'd be curious if anything appears with a smaller charsize. For what it's worth, I configured ISIS on my OS X 10.8 laptop using the --with-headas=$HEADAS option and I still have that issue.
