I'm speaking at next week's journal club. What do I do?
One-hour meetings consist of 15 minutes' pizza-eating and socializing, followed by 2 15-minute talks on current papers of interest (astro-ph is fine). Five minutes are allowed for questions after each talk. All MKI faculty, research staff, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students are invited to present a paper of their choice. Usually the first talk in a session is given by a graduate student and the second talk by a research scientist, faculty member, or postdoc.
The aim of the journal club is threefold:
- to bring together the various members of MKI in an informal, discussion-based setting
- to practice giving talks of a duration common at many astrophysics-related conferences
- to inform the members about topics of current interest in conjunction with weekly colloquia
To schedule a talk, please contact a member of the Journal Club Committee.
A possible form for a ten-minute talk (courtesy Ed Bertschinger) is outlined here.
Speakers often present papers relevant to the following week's Astrophysics Colloquium or Physics Colloquium.
Announcements
- To subscribe to an email list that distributes weekly announcements about the talks, send an email
to mki-lunch-request@space.mit.edu with the word "subscribe" in the first line of the body (not the subject!).
- Science news is welcome at Journal Club. If you have some to share, notify the moderator before the start of the talks.
- Looking for something to read at lunch? Hard copies of the papers for upcoming Journal Club meetings can be found in the rack across from the solarium (on the 6th floor on building 37). Archived copies of previous weeks' papers can be found there too.
