SN 1987A: Fitting the He-like triplets in the HETG spectra

Results

The triplets of O, Ne, Mg, and Si in the HETG-2007 SN 1987A spectrum were fit in ISIS using a modified version of Dave Huenemoerder's triplet model. Each spectra (HEG/MEG x plus/minus) was fit separately and the G and R ratio contours generated.

Summary plots for the contours in GR space are given for the elements here:
O VII , Ne IX , Mg XI , Si XIII .
The 4 spectral results have been overlayed and suspect data sets are shown with a gray label and reduced transparency. Note that the Ne IX set shows a very nice overlap of all 4 spectra's GR contours.

The individual output plots and parameter files are available in this directory as, e.g., sn87a_Ne_MEGm_GRcontNEI2Bork.ps, where the "Ne" can be O, Ne, Mg, or Si; the MEGm can be MEGm, MEGp, HEGm, HEGp; and the .ps can be .ps, .par, or .fits (the contour data file.)

Software

The fits here were carried out in ISIS using the nominally processed SN 1987A data sets from all 14 HETG-2007 SN 1987A obsids. The fit model consists of three Gaussian lines with common width and a continuum consisting of the nominal 2-shock model with the element of the line being fit's abundance set to zero. The following routines were used:
