Line-images from SN 1987A observations with the HETG

10/19/07 - dd

Data from the first 13 HETG osbid's were combined and compared with model simulations, output below.

Each set of images, centered at the indicated wavelength, gives the i) simulated images, ii) HETG data images, and the iii) color-coded residual images for the four grating-orders: MEG -1, MEG +1, HEG -1, HEG +1. Wavelength increases left-to-right with a range equivalent to -/+7500 km/s about the center wavelength. In the cross-dispersion direction (vertical) the grating images are offset by 8" from each other, the full image is +/-16" in size. The residual image pixels are color-coded to indicate: data more than 1-sigma greater than model (red), data between 0 and 1 sigma greater than model (yellow), model greater than data by 0 to 1 sigma (green), and model more than 1 sigma above data (blue).

Plots of the data and model events projected to 1D are also given. The cross-dispersion range used for these 1D plots is +/-2.05" ~ equivalent to the nominal HETG point-source selection used to create PHAs. The bin sizes are 0.01 and 0.005 A for MEG and HEG (e.g., a "grouping" of 2).

For reference, the file sn87a_model_hiopen.sl was used to define the model used here: low and high temp shock ring components with azimuthally varying emssion, ring radial velocities of 240 and 470 km/s, turbulent velocities of 200 km/s rms (FWHM=470 km/s) and a third ring component with ~ 17% of the flux and a v_turb of 9400 km/s FWHM (the "broad" component.) Various snippets of the file analysis_lines.sl were used to read in the data and create the products.
