Groups Partnered with the Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research Education and Public Outreach Office

The Kavli Institute EPO office is partnered with several nationally recognized programs offered by informal educational institutes, and professional communities involved in science, mathematics, and technology education. These include:

The Universe Forum - a national center for teaching and learning about the scientific study of the Structure and Evolution of the Universe (SEU). With the help of  NASA SEU mission and research partners, the Forum aims to foster collaborations that use the unique resources of NASA's space science research program to create exciting and substantive learning experiences for students, teachers, and the public.

The Chandra X-ray Observatory Center - MKI EPO works closely with the Chandra Public Information and Education office to host regular visits by hundreds of students and other visitor for tours of the Chandra Operations Control Center and the Chandra grating calibration laboratory.

The Timothy Smith Network Centers - The TSN Centers provide comprehensive community-based technology services to children, youth, families, adults and senior citizens in addressing a broad range of economic, therapeutic, health, educational, training, human and social service needs of the community of Greater Roxbury, Massachusetts.

Roxbury Multi-Service Center, Inc. -  RMSC provides a wide variety of in-house and community outreach and advocacy services for residents of the Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan areas of Boston.

The Hispanic Office of Planning and Evaluation, Inc. (HOPE) - HOPE is a 33 year old statewide agency was created to advocate, develop, facilitate, coordinate, and evaluate educational, human services, and community development programs for the Hispanic community of Massachusetts.

Boston 2:00-to-6:00 After-School Initiative - The Boston After-school Initiative was created in 1998 to support the expansion of high-quality after-school programs that provide learning and social development opportunities for children and youth. The MKI EPO Office has established a productive collaboration with Boston 2:00-to-6:00 to provide after-school science events and summer programs to Boston youth.

GEAR UP - GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federally funded initiative designed to help young people have high expectations for themselves and to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. The MKI EPO Office works with GEAR UP in Boston to improve Gear Up students' literacy in science.

Lynn Public Schools - The MKI EPO is partnering with the Lynn Public Schools in innovative professional development initiatives.

Cambridge Public Schools - The Cambridge School Department consists of 14 elementary schools and one comprehensive high school (Grades 9-12), with over 7,600 students served by more than 700 teachers. As a one of the PALMS Boston Metro School Districts, the Department is committed to the systemic improvement of mathematics, science, and technology education. In particular, MKI is an active contributor to the Department's efforts for the professional development of its teaching staff by providing workshops focused on space science, and tours of the MKI labs and facilities.

Boston Museum of Science - The Museum of Science, Boston is dedicated to stimulating interest in and further understanding of science and technology and to attracting the broadest possible spectrum of participants. To support this mission, the MKI has joined with the Museum's Charles Hayden Planetarium to create early-response presentations about breaking news in Space Science, and MKI speakers give presentations in the Lowell Lectures on Astronomy and other Museum platforms.

Project Astro - Project ASTRO promotes Astronomer-Teacher Partnerships to combine the expertise of educators and scientists in an equal, collaborative relationship. MKI members serve on the coalition board, as astronomer partners, and give presentations at the Summer workshops.

The Wright Center - The Wright Center is dedicated to the creation and sharing of novel instructional techniques and interdisciplinary resources for pre-college teachers. MKI has been an active contributor to the Space Science workshops to present middle and high school science teachers with the content, materials, and methods to involve their students with the Chandra X-ray Observatory satellite mission. MKI scientists directly involved in several other space missions will also take part in future space science workshops.
