Chandra - Science After School Pilot

The Education and Public Outreach Office of the Center for Space Research partnered with Mayor Thomas M. Menino's Boston 2:00-to-6:00 After-School Initiative, Boston Museum of Science, and six after-school programs to offer the Chandra - Science After School Pilot. The pilot, sponsored by NASA, consisted of six sessions at the Museum of Science occurring between September and December 2002 and a visit to the Chandra Observatory Operation & Control Center in Cambridge (the tour was open to family members).

At each session, students involved in the after school initiative would:

  • Engage in hands on, interactive learning activities
  • Hear a dynamic presentation by an MIT scientist or museum staff followed by a question/answer session
  • Go on a tour of a museum exhibit related to the science topic presented

The talks presented by our scientists were open to all museum visitors. They were held at the Current Science & Technology Center at 3:30 pm on each of the following dates:

September 27, 2002: Dr. Deepto Chakrabarty, "Discovering the Universe with the Chandra X-ray Observatory"
October 4, 2002: Dr. Herman Marshall, "Of Chandra, Quasar Jets and Monstrous Black Holes"
October 18, 2002: Dr. Frederick Baganoff, "The Mystery at the Center of Our Galaxy"
November 1, 2002: Dr. David Huenemoerder, "Of the Glamorous Lives of Hot and Cool Stars"
November 15, 2002: Dr. Bryan Gaensler, "Of Dead Stars and Cosmic Lighthouses"
December 6, 2002: GRAND FINALE
